The Kingston Red Barons - Wednesday, October 17, 2018

The Kingston Red Barons were considered ground-breakers in the world of women’s hockey. Wanted to let you know about this!

“She shoots! She scores!” Wednesday, October 17, 2018 - 7:30 p.m. Members of the fondly remembered Kingston Red Barons women’s hockey team will speak at a meeting of the Kingston Historical Society at the Seniors Centre, 56 Francis Street. This team, active in the '60s and ‘70s, lit up the sporting scene in Kingston and gave fans many memorable moments. Not only did they play exciting, smart hockey, they ran hockey schools for girls and organized (and won) provincial and local tournaments. Their achievements helped lay the groundwork for the development of female hockey in Canada - without their commitment and drive Canada would not be able today to boast of our expertise in women’s hockey. Some of the players were also instrumental in reviving women’s hockey at Queen’s and the establishment of the Canadian University Women's Hockey League in Canada; several have been inducted into the Kingston Sports Hall of Fame. Their 50th anniversary is coming up in 2019 - watch for more chances to renew your acquaintance with these outstanding women in the year ahead. Everyone welcome.
