Supplementary Information - Winter 2019 Later Life Learning Kingston Lecture series

Your attendance at the upcoming Winter 2019 Later Life Learning Kingston Lecture series provides local citizens with some unique local life long learning opportunities that will both entertain you and help you to become a better-informed citizen. There are a wide range of important emerging disruptive global political trends, along with many scientific discoveries and related public policy subjects that will be discussed at the upcoming L.L.L. lecture series.

In this regard, some Later Life Learning patrons may want future access to some supplementary information articles either before or after hearing some of the noted Later Life Learning guest lecturers.

 

For example - Stem Cell Research - The Ontario government recently established a Stem Cell Research Centre that will bring together university researchers to explore and expand the different forms of specialised stem cell research and their applied applications already taking place in research labs around the world. You can get more information on the research work of various Canadian and global stem cell research bodies by using any web search engine and plugging in the stem cell research topic of most interest to you.

For example- If you Google WIRED MAGAZINE and enter the phrase "CRISPR gene editing" you should be taken to a detailed WIRE MAGAZINE article web article that was written for lay people that covers a wide range of gene editing subjects.

A recent global press article reported on the Chinese doctor HE IANKUI who admitted to using CRISPR gene editing technology to alter the DNA of two Chinese twin babies. That Chinese doctor claimed he had altered the DNA of the babies to make the babies more resistant to HIV.
That same Chinese research project brought swift and strong objections from scientists around the world. The Chinese government soon reported that particular gene editing scientific research project was to be shut down.

All of these emerging, diverse and complex new scientific discoveries are raising a wide range of still unresolved ethical, legal and public policy consumer protection enforcement issues. There are no easy answers nor a public consensus on who should pay for new scientific research projects and who should benefit from the applied use of any specific scientific discoveries that could be potentially used to prevent and or to treat a wide range of plant, animal and human diseases.

You may choose to Google the Canadian government Health Canada website if you want access to a wide range of recent scientific research findings on Cannabis products, their potential uses, along with some of the the known Cannabis dangers and "benefits" of some types of government approved Cannabis products. The Health Canada website also features a wide range of other consumer health warnings and consumer education information resources that may be of some interest to you or someone you know.

Our local library now has at least one cook book that I'm aware of, that explains to its readers some of the many ways different types of Cannabis products can be used in food and beverage recipes. The cookbook author explains that the type and concentration of different types of Cannabis products used in various beverages and food product recipes will result in different types of mental and physical responses in different people based on some of the diverse factors the cookbook author describes in the cookbook. I regret I do not have the title of the cookbook I examined recently, nor the author name at hand to pass on to you at this time.

Wired magazine also has an interesting article on CRISPER gene editing processes that being developed to make designer plants that are more tolerant of changing climate conditions. CRISPER gene editing technologies that are being rapidly improved around the world and may some day soon be able to correct gene defects found in the womb and cure other diseases found in adults by removing and the replacement of defective genes also found in both human, animal and plant bodies.
